Word & Press is an independent publication about the software behind news, magazine and article websites. It is written by its editors, takes no payment from software vendors or hosts, and cites a source for every factual claim. It occupies word-press.net, which hosted the phpWordPress article manager from 2004 to 2006.
What we cover
We cover content management systems for publishers: the platforms behind news sites, magazines, blogs with a newsroom’s ambitions, and article archives. That means profiles of individual CMSs, side-by-side comparisons, and practical guides to running a publishing website, from editorial workflow to search visibility.
Who it is for
Editors, publishers and small newsroom owners choosing or replacing a CMS, and the developers who build and look after their sites. We assume you know your own business and want the trade-offs laid out plainly.
How we stay independent
We don’t sell software, hosting or development work, and vendors can’t pay for coverage or for a better position on a page. If that ever changes, for example if we add advertising, we will say so on this page and on every page it affects.
How we check facts
Every version number, price, licence and feature claim on the site is listed in a Sources section at the foot of its page, with the date we last checked it. Our editorial policy explains the rules we write by, and how we test explains what our evidence is for each CMS profile. If you spot a mistake, our corrections policy explains how to tell us and what we do about it.
Why this domain
From 2004 to 2006 word-press.net was the home of phpWordPress, a commercial PHP news and article manager made by Spoonlabs. In 2006 the product was renamed Vivvo and the domain began redirecting there. The domain later lapsed. Word & Press is a new and unrelated publication on the same subject; the product’s history is kept on the site.
Word & Press is not affiliated with WordPress, the WordPress Foundation, Automattic, Vivvo or any other software vendor.
