On 17 March 2005 phpWordPress staff announced a significantly enhanced site search for the next update: a more detailed result page, results sorted by relevancy, and second-level subcategories displayed more correctly. Later versions added auto-complete and an advanced search, showing that on-site search stayed a priority.

On 17 March 2005, phpWordPress staff posted a short note: site search was “significantly enhanced”, and the feature would be added to the next update. They listed three improvements. The result page gave a more detailed description of each hit. Results were sorted by relevancy. Second-level subcategories were displayed more correctly than before.
phpWordPress was a commercial PHP article manager from Spoonlabs. It was renamed Vivvo in July 2006 and was unrelated to the open-source WordPress project. The release history places this note among the other 2005 updates.
What was wrong with search before the update?
The post does not say. The three listed fixes suggest what customers had noticed: results that were not ranked by how well they matched, thin result descriptions, and subcategories that displayed incorrectly. We cannot say more from the archive, and we have not run the old software.
What did better search mean for a publisher in 2005?
A news or article site with a few thousand pages depends on its own search box for readers who arrive on one page and want another. Relevancy sorting means a reader who types a name sees the pages that mention it most prominently, rather than the order in which articles were stored. A fuller result description helps the reader decide which hit to open without opening them all.
The subcategory fix matters for sites with nested sections. If a result appears under the wrong section label, readers lose confidence in the whole index.
How did the product’s search develop?
Search was not a one-off. The archive records three later steps:
- December 2005. Version 3.0.1 added auto-complete of articles and news directly while typing in the search box.
- April 2006. The 3.2 changelog records an advanced search, added on 8 April 2006.
- May 2006. The 3.2 announcement described an enhanced search function giving greater control over the search criteria.
Together these show a product that treated its own search as a selling point from 2005, a year before the rename to Vivvo.
How is on-site search handled today?
Most current CMSs include a basic search that queries the database. Many publishers find that adequate for a small site and limiting for a large archive, where they add a dedicated search service or plugin. We have not tested specific products for this page, so we do not rank any.
When evaluating a system, check four things:
- How results are ordered, by relevance, date or both.
- Whether the result page shows enough text to choose a hit.
- Whether categories and other filters can narrow the search.
- Whether it can handle your content volume without slowing down.
The guides cover how this site approaches CMS evaluation, and the Product Updates board lists the other threads from this period. The next two notices in the series, on authors and new modules, followed within six weeks.
