The short answer

ContactBuilder was a phpWordPress 3.2 plug-in (2006) with a wizard that guided users through the fields and layout of a customised Contact Us page, in seconds according to the archive. Today Drupal's Contact module provides site-wide forms, and WordPress sites typically add a plugin such as Contact Form 7.

CONTACTBUILDER

ContactBuilder was the sixth and last feature on the phpWordPress 3.2 What’s New page. phpWordPress was a commercial PHP article manager from Spoonlabs, renamed Vivvo in 2006, and it was unrelated to the open-source WordPress project. The release history has the full 3.2 list, and the changelog has the dated entries.

What did ContactBuilder do?

The archived text says: “You can create fully customized ‘Contact Us’ pages within seconds. The wizard guides you through the creating fields and layout of your website’s contact page.” That is the whole description. A 1,714 KB QuickTime movie accompanied it, which was not archived as text.

The What’s New overview lists it as a plug-in. The changelog agrees: “ContactBuilder plug-in” is a NEW entry dated 9 April 2006, a day after the plug-in manager was added. It was the first plug-in written for the new manager, going by dates. That is an inference from the changelog, not something the page says.

How was it licensed?

On 30 May 2006 a customer who had bought the Developer package asked where to find three free plug-ins: Contact Builder, automatic Google SiteMap generation and automatic Link directory. Staff replied that they should be in the bundle and offered download links by email. So ContactBuilder was at least sometimes a bundled module. The archive gives no terms for other packages, and we have not stated any.

Why does a contact page need a builder?

A contact page looks trivial and is not. Someone must decide which fields are required, where messages are sent and how spam is kept out. A wizard turns those decisions into configuration instead of code.

The archived page does not mention spam protection. The same changelog added a CAPTCHA to article comments in 3.11 and a CAPTCHA preference in 3.2, but it does not link either to ContactBuilder, so we do not claim a connection.

How do CMSs offer contact forms now?

Drupal core includes a Contact module. Its info file describes it as providing “site-wide contact forms and forms to contact individual users”. The same file marks its lifecycle as deprecated, so check the current Drupal documentation before relying on it. See the Drupal profile.

On WordPress, contact forms usually come from a plugin. The WordPress.org page for Contact Form 7 says it lets users create customizable contact forms with flexible mail content, and lists CAPTCHA integration, Akismet spam filtering and Stripe payments. See the WordPress profile. These are documentation claims, not our tests.

What should a publisher check?

  • Whether the form is core or an add-on you must keep updated.
  • Where submissions go, and whether they are also stored.
  • What spam protection is on by default.
  • Whether you can change fields without code.
  • What personal data the form collects, and your obligations for it.

The wizard idea survives in form builders, and the same trade-off applies: a flexible form is another piece of software to maintain.
