Contentful for publishers: hosted API-first content platform

Contentful is a hosted, API-first content platform with separate delivery and preview APIs. What its front end must handle, and what we could not verify.

The short answer

Contentful suits publishers with developers who want a hosted, API-first content platform and a separately built front end. The trade-off is that it is a rented service with no self-hosted option we could verify, and preview, sitemaps, structured data and redirects are front-end work. We could not read its pricing or roles pages.

CONTENTFUL

What is Contentful?

Contentful is a hosted content platform that delivers structured content by API. On GitHub it calls itself “The Composable Content Platform” with “API-first technology”, and its public repositories include libraries for the Delivery and Management APIs, a command-line tool, migration tooling and rich-text renderers. Editors work in Contentful’s web app; a separately built front end fetches content and renders pages. For the model in general, see the headless guide.

Contentful’s own documentation and pricing pages returned HTTP 429 errors for every request we made on 10 October 2026. This profile therefore rests on Contentful’s public GitHub repositories only, and leaves out anything we could not read. We would rather publish less than guess.

Who is Contentful best for?

Contentful suits a publisher with a development team that wants a managed, API-first content layer and has the budget for a hosted service. The Management API’s environments, such as staging and production, and its content types point to teams that treat content modelling as engineering work.

It is a poor fit if you need to host everything yourself, if you have no developers, or if you must confirm costs before shortlisting. The last point matters here, because we could not.

Editorial workflow

We could not read Contentful’s documentation on roles, permissions, workflows or scheduling, so we make no claims about them. If approval stages, scheduled publishing or custom roles matter to you, check them on Contentful’s site and confirm which plan includes them.

What the sources we read do show is a clean split between draft and published content at the API level. The Delivery API returns published content only. The Preview API returns unpublished drafts and needs a preview access token.

What the front end must handle: preview. Preview is not something you switch on in the CMS alone. Your front end needs a preview mode that calls the Preview API host with a preview token, and keeps that token out of public code. The Live Preview SDK adds inspector mode, which lets editors click a tagged element to open the entry, and live updates. To use it, developers must initialise the SDK with locale configuration, tag elements with data-contentful-entry-id and data-contentful-field-id using getProps(), subscribe to content changes, and keep the original data structure, because transforming it breaks live updates. The SDK is MIT-licensed and lists React 17 or higher for React implementations.

SEO, structured data and feeds

The pages we could read describe Contentful as a content API, and none describes a sitemap generator, structured-data output or redirect manager. Assume your front end does all of this:

  • Sitemaps: generate XML from entries fetched through the Delivery API, excluding drafts.
  • Structured data: build Article or NewsArticle JSON-LD from fields you model, such as author, dates and image.
  • Redirects: store them as entries if you like, but apply them at the server, CDN or framework with the right HTTP status.
  • Titles, descriptions and canonicals: add fields to your content types and render them in the page head.
  • Rich text to HTML: the rich-text packages convert rich text fields to HTML, React or plain text, so your templates can output clean markup.
  • Feeds: RSS or Atom generated by the front end.
  • Preview isolation: keep preview routes behind authentication and out of search indexes.

Media, multilingual and performance

We could not read Contentful’s Images API documentation, so we make no claim about image transformations. Plan image sizing with the Contentful docs in hand, or handle it in your front end or CDN.

On languages, the contentful.js library supports localisation, including a withAllLocales modifier that returns every configured locale in one response. Locale limits, fallbacks and per-locale publishing were not readable, so check those before you commit. For performance, the Delivery API is served from cdn.contentful.com, but we did not read the caching or rate-limit rules.

Hosting and requirements

There is no CMS to install: the APIs are hosted by Contentful. Your own stack must host the front end. Contentful’s JavaScript libraries target Node.js LTS versions and modern browsers, and the Management library lists ES2023 environments. Both libraries include built-in rate limiting with recovery. We found no self-hosted edition in the sources we read.

Extending Contentful

Contentful’s public GitHub organisation lists an app bootstrapping tool (create-contentful-app), a marketplace apps repository, field-editor React components, a design system (forma-36), an Experience Builder repository and a migration tool. The organisation describes 272 repositories. We have not verified the number of marketplace apps, so we give none. The Management API also lets developers script entries, assets, content types and environments.

What Contentful costs

We could not read Contentful’s pricing page on 10 October 2026, so we state no plan names or prices. Before shortlisting, get current figures for users, locales, content records and API calls, and ask what happens when you exceed a limit. Add front-end development and hosting to any subscription. The cost guide lists the categories to cover, and the licence guide explains what SaaS terms change.

Where Contentful falls short

  • Hosted only, as far as we can verify. You depend on the vendor’s terms and pricing.
  • We could not verify cost. Pricing, plan limits and plan-gated features were out of reach.
  • Front-end work. Preview, SEO output, redirects and sitemaps are yours to build.
  • Developer dependence. Content modelling, environments and migrations are engineering tasks.
  • Live updates have constraints. The Live Preview SDK needs the data structure left untransformed.

The verdict for publishers

Contentful is worth shortlisting for a publisher with developers who want a hosted API-first platform and a front end of their own. The split between Delivery and Preview APIs is simple to reason about, and the surrounding libraries are open source.

This is the thinnest of our profiles, because the vendor’s documentation was unreachable when we checked. Treat it as a starting point and confirm roles, workflow, scheduling, multilingual limits and pricing directly with Contentful. Compare it with other headless systems on the comparison hub. See how we test for what a documentation-only review means.

Questions people ask

Is Contentful open source?

The platform is a hosted service, not open-source software we could verify. Several of its client libraries on GitHub, including contentful.js, the Live Preview SDK and the rich-text packages, are MIT-licensed. Your rights to the hosted platform come from Contentful's contract.

How does preview work in Contentful?

There are two APIs. The Delivery API returns published content from cdn.contentful.com. The Preview API at preview.contentful.com needs a preview token and returns drafts. Your front end chooses which to call, and the Live Preview SDK adds click-to-edit and live updates if developers implement it.

How much does Contentful cost?

We could not read Contentful's pricing page, which returned an error when we tried, so we quote no prices. Get a current quote and check limits on users, locales, records and API calls before comparing it with other options.

Does Contentful handle sitemaps and redirects?

The pages we could read do not describe either as a core feature. Treat sitemaps, structured data and redirects as work for your front end, and confirm any app or extension in Contentful's own documentation.

Can Contentful serve several languages?

Its JavaScript delivery library supports localisation and can return all configured locales at once. We could not read Contentful's locale documentation, so check fallback rules and limits there.
